Hi everyone,
The Super Bowl is coming up this weekend, and it can be difficult to find some healthy alternatives for party snacks. Whether you are throwing a party at your house, or taking something to one, I have a great healthy snack that will make everyone happy!
Chickpeas are high in fiber and protein, and this snack is easy to make. It’s a healthy, low-calorie snack mix that won’t hurt your bank account:
Spiced Chickpeas
Mix the ingredients until the chickpeas are evenly covered with the olive oil and spices. Pre-heat your oven to 425 F, and bake the chickpeas on a cookie sheet for approximately 30 minutes, or until the chickpeas are lightly brown and crunchy.
Are you having a Super Bowl Party this year? Tell me what snacks you plan to have in the comments below.

There sure are plenty of tasty healthy foods to prep and eat.
Chicken wings have changed since the 70s when they began being served as a dish. '
Watching people (try to) grip a chicken wing as they nibble and suck it's fat and bones, makes me aware that there is a God and it has a great sense of humor.
The original idea behind chicken wings, was; to create value in what was considered to be a throw, or give-,away item.
Bars would get wings from butcher shops (for free in most cases) place the wings in a slow cooker with some BBQ, Soy and Worstchester sauce and cook them until they were a slurry. Chicken wing stew.
If you could hold any of the wings w/o it falling apart, they were under cooked.
This made it possible to ladle fat off the top and end up with a tasty low fat protein dish.
yum! these look amazing! what a perfect snack!
I LOVE the alternative healthy snack :) Always a challenge when there are several unhealthy ones. This should go over well though! Thanks Ali!
Cannot wait to try this!!!
Ali, thanks for sharing the healthy Super Bowl recipe snack. I am having a gathering of friends to watch the game and am trying to have a mixture of healthy and not so healthy food. We are going to have a veggie tray, a homemade taco dip and chips, turkey sandwiches AND hot dogs and chili sauce. For dessert, a friend is bringing her famous pineapple upside-down cake. I did get low fat Cool Whip for the topping:) Of course, all the drinks are low cal!! I figure I just need to watch portion size and make sure I exercise before everyone arrives. By the way, Indy has done a "super" job with this event. I went downtown on Wednesday and it was fabulous!! The weather has been wonderful (mid-60s and high-50s). The whole city looks great with excellent events. So many famous people in our city. They even got the "two-seater" race car out for people to ride:) Hope you have a super Sunday!! Take care!

Hi everyone,
Last week we were talking in the make-up room about restaurants putting bread on the table before the meal arrives. Seriously, who's idea was that? People don't do that at home! (Right?) What is the point of filling up on empty calories while you're waiting for the food you actually ordered to arrive? My husband calls it "filler." I wrote about this in The Mommy Diet, too. I think everyone should follow a simple rule when eating out: Skip the bread! Ask your server not to bring it to the table, so you don't start nibbling mindlessly. This is an easy fix, and it could save you literally hundreds of calories.
Are you tempted by the bread basket? Do you have any easy rules for maintaining healthy eating in restaurants?

Hi everyone,
Check out my friend Christie's new cookbook, Cake Simple. Of course I don't eat cake very often, but when I do I want it to be homemade! This book even has a recipe for red velvet mini cakes.
Let me know what you think!

Hi everyone,
When I have guests over for dinner, I think it's festive to serve some kind of dessert. This can be tricky, though, because the daily calorie allowance that's healthy for my body doesn't leave much room for decadent sweets. I often serve mixed berries with a little dark chocolate, which is always a hit. But it's fun to have options, especially when it's something fun and unexpected to surprise your (grown-up) guests with!
Here's one idea, inspired by Martha Stewart. I can't tell you exactly how many calories are in this, so try it at our own risk—but it's a whole lot lighter than a slice of cheesecake! Just cut cantaloupe or watermelon into fun shapes using small cookie cutters, soak the fruit in a margarita (or a mojito!) for 15 minutes, pop the fruit on a wooden stick, and freeze it for at least 1 hour for a yummy adult treat! A fancy, modern jell-o shot, if you will. Ha.
Do you have any ideas for fun and light sweet treats for the end of a dinner party? Please share them here!

Hi everyone,
Recently I was very surprised to learn that a salad I love from a certain restaurant has almost 1,000 calories in it. Thanks to The Biggest Loser, I know a lot about calorie counts, so I was aware that the salad was hardly calorie-free, given its ingredients. The total still seemed staggering to me, though, and I won't be ordering that salad again anytime soon!
But I read an article recently that said the majority of people actually don't pay attention when restaurants give calorie counts. What about you? Does knowing the calorie count of menu items affect what you order? What do you think about the calorie labeling law for fast food and chain restaurants? I'd love to hear your thoughts about this!

Hi everyone,
Although I'm very careful about keeping my kids' sweet treats to a minimum, we bake cookies together from time to time. And when we do, we always make them from scratch. The actual process of assembling the ingredients is our favorite part—well, that, and of course Ben likes tasting the dough.
I love doing baking cookies, but I do not want to consume nine million in the process. Between spoonfuls of batter and the actual fresh baked cookies, it wouldn't be tough to overindulge in a big way. Avoiding that isn't easy, because I am ridiculously tempted by cookie dough. Full disclosure? It's one of my all time favorites.
So I needed to learn some self-defense against the dangerous chocolate chip cookie, and I developed the simplest trick ever: I chew gum while I'm baking. It's actually a great tip in general to minimize snacking in the form of "tasting" as you go along. Real chefs always say you need to taste your food (I watch Top Chef—contestants have been eliminated because they didn't taste), but when you're cooking meals you're familiar with, chewing gum instead of taking bites might keep you from filling up before dinner, and as long as you taste it once before serving, you should be fine. And with something as technical as baking, which is really about following a recipe by the numbers, I think not tasting is just fine—especially when it's a recipe you know well. Popping a little stick of gum in my mouth saves me from sneaking bites every time.
Do you have any tips to avoid snacking while you're making something in the kitchen? Please share!

Hi everyone,
Last week, we asked you about your go-to healthy snacks on a hot summer day. One of my favorite responses came from this week’s Mom of the Week: Kelly!
Here’s what Kelly had to say:
"Kabobs! There are so many different kid-friendly options. My daughter loves to help make these. Sometimes we use cheese, turkey, tomatoes, and grapes or other times we just use fresh or dried fruits. I cut up the pieces and my daughter has a great time putting them on skewers. Also, sometimes I let her cut the food into shapes with cookie cutters and we use crazy straws for the skewers. You can then put these into a kid-friendly smoothie to dress it up and make it fun! Another fun and easy summertime snack is to put yogurt tubes in the freezer. These make a great, healthy dessert."
It looks like you are new to the community, Kelly. Welcome! Those are both very cool snacks for a hot summer day! I love the idea of making the kabob ingredients even cuter by cutting them out with cookie cutters. If you've never tried this before, here are a couple good examples:

How often have we heard "you can’t spot reduce"? That fat around the belly is stubborn, no matter how hard we try with crunches, situps, cutting out the carbs, staying away from trans fats, yada yada. The gut is the last to go, if it goes at all.
Well, we have exciting news. SafSlim™ Belly Fat Transformation just hit the market with a science-based, doctor approved solution that specifically targets belly fat. In an Ohio State University study, 55 overweight, diabetic, post-menopausal women taking high-linoleic safflower oil lost up to 9.4% of belly fat in 16 weeks without modifying their diet or exercise. They also had an average of a 20.3% increase in adiponectin, the good belly fat hormone that helps with insulin sensitivity and metabolism.
Nutritionists and scientists tell us that in addition to poor diet, a sedentary lifestyle, stress and genetics, the major causes of belly fat are: blood sugar imbalance, elevated insulin and low levels of the adiponectin hormone, which slows metabolism and increases appetite. The body responds by selectively storing fat in the belly region. As fat accumulates, all factors associated with metabolic syndrome worsen.
Daily supplementation of high-linoleic safflower oil activates adiponectin, regulates fasting blood sugar, and improves insulin sensitivity. Metabolism increases and the body responds by shedding belly fat. Which triggers additional adiponectin.
ReBody™ scientists and innovators created SafSlim, a delicious, smoothie-like product that contains this high-linoleic safflower oil, to be taken before two meals a day (that’s where the ‘have your dessert first’ idea comes in). The patent-pending SAFActive78™ delivery makes it easy for the body to absorb. SafSlim is all-natural, vegetarian, and gluten-free. It’s non-GMO and free of artificial flavors, colors, sugar, wheat, dairy, eggs, and soy. It comes in berry cream and tangerine cream flavors in 16 oz. bottles, which contain two weeks worth of product at a truly reasonable price.
You can purchase SafSlim at GNC stores and GNC.com. Enter this exclusive AlisonSweeney.com coupon code for 10% off your SafSlim purchase: code SS10.
