Counting Calories?
Posted by Ali Sweeney on Aug 11, 2011

Hi everyone,

Recently I was very surprised to learn that a salad I love from a certain restaurant has almost 1,000 calories in it. Thanks to The Biggest Loser, I know a lot about calorie counts, so I was aware that the salad was hardly calorie-free, given its ingredients. The total still seemed staggering to me, though, and I won't be ordering that salad again anytime soon!

But I read an article recently that said the majority of people actually don't pay attention when restaurants give calorie counts. What about you? Does knowing the calorie count of menu items affect what you order? What do you think about the calorie labeling law for fast food and chain restaurants? I'd love to hear your thoughts about this!

Great post, this is definitely one of my FAVORITE BLOGS!!!  Now I want to go eat some of those snack skeweres from the post below!

I never count calories. Jeeze, I know that sounds crazy.... but since we made the organic/whole foods switch I am losing weight at a steady pace that I wasn't when I was counting calories. I AM aware of what are good calories and what are bad. We rarely eat out ( buying organic creates a financial crunch when it comes to extras).... so when we do I view it as a treat or share a meal or take half home. We tend to stick to places, like Chipotle', that offer whole foods.

I'm sure I could lose weight faster by counting calories, but I found myself on sparkpeople all the time inputting food, stressing over what was left that I could eat. I am much happier focusing on nutritional values and exercise minutes.

I have never heard about resturants whit calories in the menu, The resturants in sweden I have been to don´t have that. But it´s a very good idea. And I counted my favorit breakfast at the drivein I go to some time, 620 calories OMG...

I just recently came back from a trip to Minneapolis and a lot of eating out. I don't normally count calories either but I really do like when restaurants have an under 550 calorie menu and items similar. For the places that don't, I make sure I always have my bottle of Fat Fighters with me to help with some of those guilty pleasures :)

I would love to see calorie counts on all menus, but we don't see it much where I live.  That's one thing I love about NYC...many places list calories!

Being a single mom I do not eat out often. When I do, if the menu has the calories written, I do certainly take that into account. The divorce has been difficult for my 11 year old, she has a bit of a weight issue herself, so if I pay attention to the calorie information, than it encourages her to do so as well. Since being in school and the added stress of finalizing the divorce, I have lost over 20 lbs. However, it is not always that easy to put a child on a diet. We do eat our evening meals together.

I am such a bummer for calories with everything I take.  I mean, i try to keep at most a daily 1600 calorie diet per day.  Though there are times that I go overboard but I have to forgive myself for those days.  I hate it though when the snacks I buy uses a different measure which makes the measuring a bit harder because you still have to convert them using some formula used in science class.

Hi Ali...

I just recently just started counting calories and watching portion control..I found it just amazing to look at the calories and the serving size compared to what I was eating...What a difference like for instance never relized until I started looking that there is 100 calories in 1 peanut butter cup...lol..Like anything I guess you don't realize what you are putting in your body until you pay attention..

Big fan of yours on Days keep up the good work...And you look Fabulous!!!!

Sandy
