Meet Our Mom of the Week: Erin!
Posted by Ali Sweeney on Aug 1, 2011

Hi everyone,

Last week, we asked you what your beach bag essentials are. Everyone agreed that the most essential item is sunscreen, and this week’s featured mom concurs. She also says she tends to come home from the beach with a lot more than she started with…

Meet this week's Mom of the Week: Erin Walsh!

Here’s what Erin had to say:

“With four kids ranging in age from 3 to 17, there is not much that ISN'T essential to a beach/pool trip.  First and foremost is sunblock.  But we can't have just one kind.  We have SPF60 for the baby, SPF45 for sensitive skin for the 9-year-old, SPF45 waterproof for the 11-year-old and SPF30 for the teenager who needs a totally rad tan. (Do teenagers still say totally rad?)
Once the skin protection is taken care of, we shove in towels and a change of clothes, flip flops, water bottles, sand & water toys, snacks (Clif Kids bars are a hit), sunglasses, wallet (for the post-pool iced coffee for Mommy) and the iPhone so I can keep up with my bloggy buddies and take pictures of all the fun!

What we bring HOME in the bag is another story - sand, random toys that I swear aren't ours, half eaten bags of chips (someone hit the concession stand) and maybe, if I'm lucky, the email address or phone number of another overwhelmed Mommy so we can set up a Happy Hour playdate next week.”

Thanks for sharing, Erin. I love that you leave the pool with lots of fun photos and the occasional new friend—even if it means hauling half-eaten food and sand home, too! :)

Oh, I do the frozen yogurts too!  Growing up my mom always had fresh fruit salad in the fridge for us in the summer.  Nothing better than cold fruit on a hot day!  I do the same for my kids, but I also freeze grapes and blueberries and offer them to the kids in place of freeze pops.  They love them and they're having a healthy snack instead of a frozen sugar stick!

I am loving all of these frozen fruit ideas everyone... I am never too old to learn new things I guess :-) It gor me thinking what else I could try freezing for those hot days and here is what I came up with:

1) Milky Way bar frozen on a popicle stick.. I know not healthy but ohhhhh so good. smiley-embarassed.gif

Freeze wet mini towels and wrap in foil before putting in the cooler for those especially hot days..

Freeze water in a spray bottle (not to drink) and place in the cooler..as the water unfreezes, spray a mis or two ion their faces to keep them cool... sometimes I also use the melted ice cold water at the bottom of the cooler.smiley-tongue-out.gif

Stay Kool my friends smiley-cry.gif

BTW..as you can tell Ali and friends, the spell checker is missing on my screen again for this site..

Ok..Guys..this is totally off subject but I don't know how to start a new topic.  My son is 16 years old and just had his second shoulder surgery.  His first was in October (torn labrum) he is a baseball player.  Dr. released him in mid May only played a few games and tore it again!  Actually a lot worse than the first time.  We changed doctors!  Anyway he is 4 days post surgery and totally bored to death!  He is feeling somewhat better but still on pain meds and can't do anything!  He has to wear a sling with a huge wedge beneath it!  We have watched movies, SHARK WEEK, I even bought him the Tim Tebow book in hopes he read a little!  Any suggestions for something to do!!  He is miserable!!!

Favorite go to snacks... Strawberries, blueberries, raspberries...and of all things peas... All the kids in my family love to go out in the garden and pick peas and then eat them... we used to pick big mixing bowls full and then sit down at night and eat them until they were all gone.. they are so much healthier then potato chips and just as addicting in my opinion!

Go to healthy snacks---we love making smoothies around here!  And we use either fresh or frozen fruit and I let the kids pick what they want.  We do make milkshakes too.  Not entirely healthy but it's better than getting one at a fast food.  I will sometimes make it with frozen yogurt.  I also keep yogurt on hand-trying to get into the Greek yogurt because it's healthier.  Also, I like to keep just fruit on hand-bananas, grapes, cherries...whatever we decide to buy that week.  We do like to splurge occasionally and will buy a small cake or pie or bake cookies.

Kabobs! There are so many different kid friendly options. My daughter loves to help make these. Sometimes we use cheese, turkey, tomatoes and grapes or other times we just use fresh or dried fruits. I cut up the pieces and my daughter has a great time putting them on skewers. Also, sometimes I let her cut the food into shapes with cookie cutters and we use crazy straws for the skewers. You can then put these into a kid friendly smoothie to dress it up and make it fun! Another fun and easy summertime snack is to put yogurt tubes in the freezer. These make a great, healthy dessert.
