Does anyone else bring there own snacks?..I make sure to always have something in my purse with me...Usually my Kashi Granola ( dark choc with Cherry). So when I'm at a coffee place I know I'll have something healthy with my coffee etc..
Hi everyone,
I took a couple of pics of baked goods at a popular morning coffee spot (I’m not naming names…), and then snapped them again, revealing the calorie counts. Think you can guess?
How many calories in this iced lemon pound cake?

Answer:

How many calories in this blueberry scone?

Answer:

I'm all for having a little a treat once in a while. But especially first thing in the morning, a sugary baked good is not the way to go. You need to start your day off right. First of all, yes, you should eat something and get that metabolism going. However, it is super-important to put the right things in your body early in the day.
The worst part of those almost 500 calories is that they're completely wasted, because you're going to be hungry again in about 20 minutes. Unlike healthy carbs, such as oatmeal or multi-grain cereals, simple carbs (like sugar) move through your system so quickly that you end up hungry all over again and end up eating way more calories than you would have if you'd eaten something nutritious in the first place.
Also, these baked goods seem to be presented and sold as “snacks” (as in, hey, want a quick bite?). As if they don’t contribute to your calorie consumption for the day. Obviously, that’s not true. You have to be knowledgeable about what you are eating. A high-calorie scone is not the same thing as a mid-afternoon apple with a touch of peanut butter, or a small handful of healthy trail mix. Nope, these baked goods are basically full meal replacements—in terms of calories, NOT nutrients.
Get to know the calorie counts of foods at the places you go often for breakfast and snacks. How close were you to guessing accurately the calorie counts for the scone and cake above? Buyer beware!

I was given a cookie at Subway today. Probably about 240 calories. I just couldn't resist it. But it was gone before I even realized it, and I certianly wasn't satisfied. Good thing I only had one or I would have wanted more. Made myself eat an apple before that though, took 30 minutes to finish that.
PS - My favourite coffee shop in the morning is a great place for coffee, but the breakfast selection is not very good. It's all bakery type snacks. I've never been fulfilled eating bakery for breakfast so usually opt out of it.
I actually work at said coffee store.....and let me tell you, it's hard to be around all those treats all day long!! There is an oatmeal selection there...but be careful! The small toppings that come along with them are 100 calories each! (except the brown sugar, which is 50) I often eat the oatmeal and add a splenda with a little bit of cinnamon. Sometimes I switch it up and ask them to add a squirt of sugar free cinnamon dolce syrup in my oatmeal instead. Totally tasty!
I usually have a piece of toast for breakfast made with my homemade bread and a slice of cheese melted on top or with peanut butter. I have acid reflux so I have a problem eating pastries, candy or ice cream; specifically anything made with sugar. Good for me - my glucose count when I have blood work done is usually in the low 90's or even below. Thanks for a good reminder of the hollow calories and where they lurk!
If I indulge in such things, it has to be later in the day. The diabetes makes things like that in the morning spike my sugar way more than they would later in the afternoon. Good ole eggwhite omlette, toast, & coffee is what I have to stick with.
Wasting carbs is something we talk about in our house, more than wasting calories. My son has type 1 diabetes, so it is an ongoing battle to help him understand that there are better food choices that work for him.
Geez, where is this Starbucks that offers its calories? That is why I buy their Oatmeal - I great way to get a good breakfast in the morn...
Why do these sweets have to be filled with sooo many ingredients that are not good for you? :/
